KENYA – Nairobi faces a severe waste management crisis, with 95% of waste being reusable but only 5% recycled, leading to pollution and lost economic opportunities.
Gjenge Makers, a Nairobi-based social enterprise, converts industrial and consumer plastic waste into sustainable and affordable building materials such as paving blocks, paving tiles and manhole covers. Their innovative process is certified by the Kenyan Bureau of Standards.
Gjenge Makers has recycled over 200 tons of plastic waste, created over 600 jobs for women and youth, and fostered a culture of recycling in Kenya. Their work not only reduces pollution but also drives socio-economic growth and community empowerment.
