Universitas 21 Health Sciences Group ‘Global Learning Partnership’

A project by Universitas 21 Health Sciences Group - UN SDG Initiative

A unique global health experience working with a rural Nepalese community that aims to equip students with a detailed understanding of the SDGs.
The Global Learning Partnership (GLP) is a four-week community engagement programme based in Nepal that brings together Health Sciences students and staff from across the globe to learn more about and contribute to the UN SDGs.

The programme is designed to build a detailed understanding of the SDGs (most specifically Goal 3, Good Health and Wellbeing), health promotion, advocacy, leadership and cultural competency in a complex, under-resourced setting.

The first GLP took place in 2016 at the Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences (KUSMS) and the Dhulikhel Hospital Outreach Centre of Dhungkharka, Karve District, Nepal and successfully ran there again in 2018. The third GLP will take place in March 2019 and involves participation from over 20 students with half from Universitas 21 member institutions and half from KUSMS.

The programme includes one teaching week (based at KUSMS) and three weeks of community based engagement. Week 1 is designed to prepare students for their community based work; provides the opportunity for students to get to know one another and set group goals and learning outcomes. In the following three weeks students enter the community, undertake a health needs assessment and develop health promotion initiatives based on their findings.

Students are divided into four groups:

o Disability
o Chronic Pain
o Women’s Health and Nutrition
o Oral Health

The project continues to create positive impact and demonstrates success in enabling students from a variety of backgrounds to work together to serve under resourced communities in Nepal. Specifically, it provides them with a greater knowledge of the role of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
