Sustainability Steering Group

A project by Defra ICT and Private Sector Partners

Bringing together cross industry groups to deliver global impact, providing standards, frameworks and innovative solutions to transform the ICT sector.
This project seeks to promote, collect share and implement best practice aligned to the UN sustainable development goals, under Defra ICT’s guiding principle to work in partnership across industries, the country and internationally for the good of nature and society. The project targets all manufacturers of ICT and components, users, disposers, recyclers world-wide.

Organisations involved form the “The joint sustainable ICT group”, comprising Atos, Dell, Vodafone, IBM, Cap Gemini, Ark, HPE, Tier 1, Xerox and DXC and Defra’s Group Infrastructure and operations. Mattie Yeta of Defra formed this group on 11th October 2018, hosting a meeting with a UN Global Compact Executive Director in the UK. We agreed to resolve the following industry challenges:-
• Sustainable and Ethical Procurement (supply chain matters)
• Packaging – Sustainable packaging
• Transport and Logistics – Models for sustainable business operations
• Water Use – Framework for understanding water use in ICT
• Working Conditions – A model for tracking working conditions in our supply chain
• Footprint/Emissions - of the services we consume
• Cloud Measures – A new model for measuring our cloud energy
• Waste Hierarchy – A model for sending Zero to landfill
• Circular Economy including Critical Material/Conflict Minerals
• Our Communities – What we do to support our communities
• Net gain and economic sustainability

The group aims to launch the industry guide on 24 October UN Day as a dedication to the UN and our commitment.
