The Sustainable Turn (VS)

A project by Virada Sustentável Institute

Hundreds of attractions and free activities, distributed in regions of cities, occupying varied public spaces, cultural facilities, schools and universities.
The Sustainable Turn (Virada Sustentável) is a mobilization movement for sustainability that organizes the largest festival on the theme in Brazil. It began in 2011 in São Paulo and has already had editions in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Salvador and Manaus, among others.
It involves the articulation and direct participation of civil society organizations, public agencies, government agency, cultural collectives, social movements, cultural teams, companies, schools and universities, among others, with the objective of presenting a positive and inspiring vision on sustainability and its different themes for the population, in addition to strengthening the networks of transformation and social impact that exist in the different cities.
The thematic design of the Sustainable Turn is currently backed by the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, which are also the guiding principles for festival programming in all cities. Leave no one behind.
How to inspire and mobilize people for sustainability from a positive, purposeful and, above all, more seductive approach? And to show that the sustainability dimension is not restricted to exclusively environmental themes such as biodiversity, air pollution or water resources, including also dissociated subjects from this great thematic umbrella such as poverty eradication, diversity, urban mobility citizenship, human rights and so many others?
It was with these challenges in mind that a group of people created a sustainability education campaign in 2011 and gave it the face of a major festival. Sustainable Turn was born there. A cultural event with at least two days of life and hundreds of attractions and free activities, distributed in different regions of cities, occupying varied public spaces, cultural facilities, schools and universities.
