Girls LEAD (Leadership, Education, Advocacy and Development).

A project by Save Our Needy

Girls LEAD is a mobile school empowering marginalized girls with skills to become self-reliant and take action using innovative art, communication, and ICT.
Girls LEAD is an initiative which empowers marginalized adolescent girls including girls with disabilities in high-poverty communities in Nigeria and Benin to build their confidence, develop skills and improve their knowledge in order for them to become self-reliant. The initiative educates girls on the SDGs and encourages them to share their knowledge with their peers/in their communities.
The girls gain skills in leadership, entrepreneurship, ICT and digital skills, vocational skills, and life skills including soft skills like communication, problem-solving and creative thinking necessary for their personal and career development. They also learn about sexual health and reproductive rights (SHRH).
The initiative which targets in-school and out-of-school girls operates as a mobile school where the girls are trained by peer educators at no cost. Girls LEAD, built on the principle of "leaving no one behind" started in 2016. It adopts the “school for life” model. It uses art, innovative communication methods such as comic books, music, dance, drama, and interactive video, and ICT that are creative and fun to teach the girls. They learn how they can take action in their communities and use their voices to tackle SDG issues notably poverty, quality education, and gender inequality. The initiative provides a safe space for girls to discover their potential and thrive. They are able to freely express themselves, learn and explore new ideas. They work in groups facilitated by trained peer educators who they can easily connect with.
Through this initiative, Save Our Needy is working to achieve the SDGs and raise the next generation of women leaders who are Champions of SDGs. The initiative has positively impacted and transformed the lives of about 3,500 girls. Girls clubs are formed for the sustainability of the initiative. Through the use of social media, the campaign has reached more than 500,000 people.
