Project i-SME

A project by Bangladesh SME Corporation Ltd.

i-SME is the first of its kind business-investor matchmaking platform targeting MSMEs with 8000 registered, 2000 trained and 1400 financed enterprises to date.
Bangladesh is an emerging economy, and naturally it has seen its lower income population prosper over the last decade. At this juncture, Bangladesh finds its banks providing traditional financing to clients with proven track record of creditworthiness, and its MFIs providing very small sized and frequent-installment microloans to rural population. This leaves a mass market demand for credit unmet. This problem is known as the missing middle.

In addition to that, owners of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) do not have the financial knowledge to prepare formal documentation like financial statements required to apply for bank financing. BSCL’s field officers visit the MSMEs at regular intervals and use the i-SME mobile app and ask beneficiaries a series of simple questions. They then input that data into the app and the system auto-generates the up-to-date financial statements, credit evaluation report etc. documentary requirements of the enterprise.

Since its launch in 2016, i-SME has helped over 8000 MSMEs register, over 2000 gain business development support and 1400 receive financing. The aim of Project i-SME has been to provide access-to-finance opportunity to the missing middle of Bangladesh previously deemed uncreditworthy by formal financial institutions.
