Canal Nacional Project, Mexico City

A project by Fundación López de la Rosa

The dream of returning to the city-water.
The objective of Canal Nacional Project, Mexico City, is to recover and conserve the most important nautical communication route in Mexico City history with an approximate age of 2000 years.
The Canal Nacional name during the Prehispanic period was Huey Acalli Aotli or Huey Apantli, in the Spanish Viceroyalty renamed Acequia Real a Mexicaltzingo, and from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day called Canal Nacional.
Unfortunately, the Canal Nacional is the only survivor to date of more than 20 rivers destroyed in the urbanized area of Mexico City, very violent against its environmental wealth and highly dependent on the automobile.
Since 2005, the López de la Rosa Foundation has worked on the recovery of the Canal Nacional with environmental and cultural organizations, academia, government, legislators, citizens and private initiative.
At 14 years, our work is today a fundamental reference of how to recover a water heritage in Mexico City with a population of more than 8 million people, building community, mobility, local climate change and cultural change.
The Canal Nacional Project benefits more than 150,000 people.
For us, it is fundamental that we think globally and act locally with the sustainable development goals for current and future generations, so that in a project such as the Canal Nacional, all the urban, environmental, economic, and cultural possibilities are valued and harmonized for citizenship, and generates a virtuous circle of human development.
We hope that this project can also help in the design of recovery of other environmental, cultural, urban and historical heritage with shared characteristics or problems similar with an urban vision oriented to the person and not to motorized transport.
