Girls Get Equal

A project by Plan International

Girls Get Equal is the world’s biggest youth-led campaign for gender equality – a global campaign to ensure girls everywhere are equally seen, heard and val
At Girls Get Equal, we know girls want a world where they can live freely, speak out and demand change without fear of attack, where they are treated with dignity and respect, and ultimately where they are equally seen, heard and valued. Yet for the vast majority of girls this is a distant dream due to harmful gender norms and practices and unequal power structures that hold them back. Girls Get Equal is a youth-led social norm campaign designed to accelerate progress on gender equality by putting girls’ and young women’s leadership and young people’s actions at the forefront of global conversations. It seeks to add value to existing movements, using Plan International’s platform and reach to support activists who know how to bring about change in their communities, with gender equality as the focus. It is designed by girls for girls, with a platform of youth advisers forming a central part in the conception, planning and execution of the campaign.

We recognise inequality is a universal issue that affects girls in every single country and it requires the universal approach of the SDGs to be truly transformative. Our aim is to amplify the actions and campaigns of young gender justice activists from grassroots to global. We are concentrating efforts into connecting power-holders with young people, and ensuring girls have influence over the decisions that affect their lives.

The global campaign launched on International Day of the Girl 2018 and will run for five years. By the end of 2019 it is estimated that over 65 countries will be implementing this campaign. Over five years, we aim to mobilise over 15 million girls and young women as change-makers and 50 million of their allies to accelerate progress on gender equality and the SDGs.
