SDG Impact Assessment Tool

A project by South Pole

The SDG Impact Assessment tool provides a comprehensive analysis of a project, portfolio or strategy’s contribution to the SDGs.
We want to make the Sustainable Development Goals a reality. But for the SDGs to be leveraged at scale from a corporate and investor perspective, impacts need to become measurable and comparable. That is where our tool comes into play. We ultimately aim to ensure that the SDGs are factored into economic decision-making processes and thus applied at scale. That would mean positively impacting lives and communities across the world, from developing countries to developed ones.

While the SDGs have been widely adopted, the team began looking for a solution after being left frustrated by the lack of transparent pathways and easily comparable data for SDG quantification. Following extensive research into existing methodologies, the tool was launched in March 2018. The objective of the SDG tool is not only to guide companies on how they can quantify the SDGs but also, to help them re-prioritise their strategies. The tool aims to help companies report SDGs in a traceable manner and creates a standard for the data needed to quantify the Sustainable Development Goals. This means that SDG impacts' can be measurable and importantly comparable across sectors. This helps build synergies and linkages between different sectors, where diverse actors can understand common ground, and also where an expert partner can step in to fill a gap.

From assessing investment portfolios to working with emission reduction project developers, with wide adoption this tool has the potential to build incredible bridges between all those striving for urgent climate action. For example, South Pole worked with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), a public sector company that involved in high-speed rail projects in India. The impact assessment tool was used to help the DMRC align with SDGs not only at company level but also at individual project level.
