Asutifi North District for SDG 6 (Ahonidie Mpontuo)

A project by IRC Ghana

The first water, sanitation and hygiene master plan of its kind, which represents collective voices and action for SDG 6 in Asutifi North District, Ghana.
At the heart of our vision is providing safe and sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services to the entire population -84,000 people- of Asutifi North District, Ghana by 2030. We`re implementing this initiative in collaboration with district government and other partners including: World Vision International, Safe Water Network, Netcentric Campaigns, Centers for Disease Control, Aquaya Institute, with funding from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation.

How it all started? In 2017, IRC Ghana together with Asutifi North District and partners, united local and national government leaders, chiefs, market women, water service providers, private sector, local NGOs and sachet water producers to reflect on how to provide WASH services to everyone in the district.
Through a multi-stakeholder consultation process, they jointly created a WASH master plan for the district with the following vision:

Every person in Asutifi North District will have access to safe and sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene services in a conducive environment where water resources are sustainably managed.

The plan sets out what such a diverse group needs to do to make SDG 6 a reality for the district by 2030.

This district WASH master plan is the first of its kind. People working on WASH in Ghana and other parts of the world attended its colourful launch ceremony in Asutifi North. Developing a vision and plan where the voices of traditional leaders and those of local government have the same weight had never been done before. As a result, the plan gained popular support and built a sense of ownership amongst local people. Partners are now implementing the plan under government leadership and tracking its impact on the lives of people in the district.

Asutifi North District for SDG 6 (Ahonidie Mpontuo) demonstrates how collaborative efforts, shared measurements, mutually reinforcing activities and continuous communication can advance a shared vision at the local level to achieve SDG 6.

About the Organization /Team

IRC is an independent, non-profit organisation. We believe in moving away from short-term interventions, towards developing resilient water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) systems: a network of people and things working together to deliver WASH services.

IRC is based in the Netherlands and works in six focus countries: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Honduras, India and Uganda.

In Ghana, our priority at national level is supporting strong national WASH systems, including a network of people, resources and institutions. Our priority in Asutifi North District is to strengthen local systems and leverage partnerships for the implementation of the district WASH master plan.
