History showed plenty of heart-warming stories in the face of adversity. Remember Stephen Hawking? One of the most illustrious scientists in this century, Hawking had lived longer and achieved more than most quadriplegics had but till the end of his celebrated life, he had never shown that he was done. Despite living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for more than 50 years, he had never wilted in the face of adversities; instead he just kept going. At the end of his journey, he had a plethora of achievements even a normal human being who is brilliant on his own right would envy.

Closer to home, Suriati, a young Indonesian mother of 2, had her dreams taken away by an earthquake hitting Yogyakarta in 2006 when falling rubble crushed her left leg, leaving her fearful over the future of herself and her family. Clouded with uncertainties, she feared that she could no longer help support her family. Her children’s education has always been a priority to her. That fear almost became reality when she lost her job, her only source of income. When she heard about R.I.S.E. through an NGO, her hope revived. This sparked a new determination in her to stand up and keep going despite her disability. Through R.I.S.E programme, she embarked on her tailoring business and never looked back.

We recognise that to make a civilisation, people like Suriati are a quintessential piece that completes the society’s puzzle. It is imperative that people are empowered on the basis of equity and it is in our best interests to level the playing field for disadvantaged communities by increasing their income and become financially independent.
