Chikondi Girls Project

A project by Enelless Pemba Malawi and Johanna Ahns Sweden

We have so far distributed 1000 already made and trained 1000 girls how they can make their own sanitary pads by using locally available resources and art.
We, Johanna Ahs (Sweden) Enelless Pamba(Malawi) meet in South Africa in 2016 as we were both doing our internship as human rights peer educator; our passion for human rights of a girl child made us do a case study of rural girls in Malawi in which we found out that one of her problem is access to sanitary pads. In Malawi there are girls who are still using towels; newspapers or a cloth during menstruration due to lack of sanitary towels; as Enelless is a visual artist she thought about an easy way of how the girls can make their own sanitary pads by using locally available resources by using art as a tool as we are working on SDGs goal number 4. Now we have trained 1000 girls how to make the easy sanitary pad make out of used fabric; an old umbrella and old bathing towels and old t-shirts now that the girls have access to education they no longer miss classes when they have their period. The pads are washable and easy to dry, can stay up to 2 years and done by hand.
"Education liberates the intellect; unlocks the imagination and is fundamental for self respect; we believe period should not make a girl miss school" and also "Gender bias is undermining our social fabric and devalues all of us”; it is not just a human right issue but a tremendous waste of the world potential by denying girls rights goal number 5. And by using recycled and local materials as well as educating both boys and girls on the topic, we want to include SDGs goal number 16 as we believe that sustainable development is vital for future progress. We hope to reach to 6000 girls in Malawi by 2030.
