The Mwihoko Women Project

A project by Soroptimist International

Develops women's leadership skills in an easy to replicate model that prepares women to be decision makers in the water sector.
The Mwihoko Women Project in rural Nakuru County, north-west of Nairobi, Kenya, is created and designed jointly by Soroptimist International (SI) and the Mwihoko Women Group, Kenya, project managed by the SI Union of Kenya, who have been working with the women some time on differing projects. Funding is delivered through a two-year SI campaign, ‘Women, Water & Leadership Appeal’ with donations secured from the 75,000 SI global membership based in 122 countries.

500 women farmers in Nakura County are involved in the transformative education and agricultural programme. Through training and capacity building and working with local partners, the women are educated in agriculture and modern farming techniques, creating food security for themselves and their families, whilst being supported in the move from subsistence farming to selling their produce at market.

Implementing the targets in SDGs, 4, 5 and 6, the Mwihoko Women project, centres around the available lands and community resource centre. Following extensive discussions with the local women farmers, the programme was designed to respond to the current demands of the community: upgrades were made to the community centre; water tanks a water pan, clean energy and a toilet block introduced; an adjacent farming demonstration plot created, with trees, vegetable seed nurseries and beehives installed; and finally, new technologies and tools delivered to prepare for a programme of high-quality training and hands-on farming programmes to take place
