Sophrosyne Mental Health

A project by Sophrosyne Mental Health

Sophrosyne is a place where teens can discover the different parts of their brains and understand why they feel the things that they feel.
Almost two years ago, I was hospitalized for my depression and anxiety. I was there for a month, and it was probably the most remarkable period of growth for me. When my mom and dad were growing up, many people didn't talk about mental illnesses, so they didn't know how to speak to me about it at first. It felt like they doubted my ability to understand my own body when I tried to talk to them about it. My family has a history of mental illnesses and disorders. These disorders range from depression to anxiety to bipolar disorder. I had no idea at the time, but my parents were struggling with depression too. As a young adult, fighting with a variety of mental illnesses and disorders, I struggled to find interesting, interactive places where I could learn more about the way that my brain worked. After my hospitalization, in the following year, I created an Instagram for mental health and started posting on my Instagram about my history with mental health. As tried to cope, I felt as though I could not successfully manage my emotions if I could not understand what was going on inside my head. Because of the lack of resources for mental health for teenagers, I created Sophrosyne Mental Health so that other teens don’t have to go through the same struggle of not being able to find accessible and exciting resources.
I have not created a video yet, but I would be happy to do so if necessary. Please send me an email, and I'll get it in as soon as possible.

About the Organization /Team

Sophrosyne Mental Health provides a platform for teens to be able to understand the ways that their brains work, and find available resources that are easy to use. We hope to encourage teens to talk openly and honestly about their mental health, to help decrease stigma.
