Our Sustainability - A Reminder Through Interactive Experience

A project by The One Academy, Sunway Malls

Shedding light onto real world situations through interactive installations, reminding people of experiences that are otherwise taken for granted.
The project was initiated by Sunway Malls who approached The One Academy looking for a creative approach to bring SDG awareness to mall visitors. The goal was simple: get people to know SDG experientially. The decided approach however was not as simple: interactive installations. We decided to challenge The One Academy’s multimedia students, turning this into a semester-long course project. After 6 weeks of pitching ideas and 7 weeks of restless efforts driven by creativity, grit, and determination, the 18 students involved outdid themselves. Through weekend of 25th and 26th August 2018, a period mall visitors traffic is at its peak, four interactive installations were proudly presented to public: Beyond The Garden Wall, SAW (Sexist Arm Wrestling), Mao, and Lights Out.

“Beyond The Garden Wall” took the form of a low-income home. The replica contains objects like clothing, mattress, food plate, and more; which when interacted with, triggers a related short movie made by the students (e.g. food plate plays a movie about hunger) to play through an old TV set. “SAW” pits male and female robots in arm wrestling game. Female robot is scripted to win, but conspicuously winner announcement swaps the winner to male, triggering unfairness and shock in players to highlight issue of gender equality. “Mao” is an interactive book with story told through animation displayed using Pepper’s ghost technique. Its short story conveys how minor changes to our daily lifestyle can impact the environment. “Lights Out” adapted a known cardboard planetarium build, embedding LED into the dome to create a starry-night experience. The stars however, become more visible only as visitors turn off lights inside small cardboard homes, reminding them of light pollution and responsible energy use.
