Conservation Cooperatives for Systems Change

A project by Planet Indonesia

We create Conservation Cooperatives (CCs) that engage in the management of protected areas and at-risk ecosystems while addressing the root of rural poverty.
Indigenous and rural communities (IRCs) represent some of the most highly marginalized and socially neglected groups on the planet. The
vast majority of IRCs living in tropical latitudes inhabit some of the most at-risk biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet. They represent just 4% of the world’s population but manage as much as 80% of the world’s biodiversity (World Bank 2015) in tandem with protected areas (national parks, nature reserves, etc). Planet Indonesia’s journey started with listening. Listening to communities on why they were involved in wildlife poaching, illegal fishing, and land clearing. The answers across marine and terrestrial ecosystems alike came down to one issue, lack of access to basic services was driving rural poverty tied with environmental loss. At Planet Indonesia we address the issue of socio-economic inequalities in rural communities that drives environmental loss. We create Conservation Cooperatives (CCs) - community-led organizations that engage in the management of protected areas and at-risk ecosystems. These CCs are the platforms where we administer services to communities in three sectors: business, education, and health. Our CCs take a conservation pledge at the community level to protect forests and wildlife while acting as a mechanism to address the root causes of rural poverty. At the end of 2018 our CCs will have roughly 3064 members (~13,500 individuals) managing over 50,000 ha of Bornean rainforest and 7,000 ha of carbon-rich mangrove forest, and replanting roughly 30,000 seedlings annually on degraded lands. Deforestation rates decreased in our project sites by 45% within two years of our interventions and program results point to improved human well-being for communities partnered with our organization.
We represent one of the few conservation organization’s leveraging sustainable development goals to bring about systems change at the grassroots level.

About the Organization /Team

At Planet Indonesia we address the issue of socio-economic inequalities in rural communities that drives environmental loss. We create Conservation Cooperatives (CCs) - community-led organizations that engage in the management of protected areas and at-risk ecosystems. Our community-led partnerships combat rural poverty through nature-based sustainable development. For our innovative approach we have won awards with UNDP’s Equator Prize, The Future For Nature Award, and Project Inspire’s UN Women Award. Our team has won important fellowships with institutions such as Fulbright, Ford Foundation, and Coady Women’s Institute.
