Based in Malawi, the Art & Global Health Center Africa (ArtGlo) envisions a world where communities are healthy, open, and active, and people are free to be who they are. To achieve this world, ArtGlo harnesses the power of the arts to nurture creative leadership, and to ignite bold conversations, while driving action for the SDGs.
ArtGlo’s initiative, Make Art/Stop AIDS aims to empower young leaders through the participatory arts to share messages concerning sexual and reproductive rights with their peers. Since 2017, this initiative has collaborated with Malawian college students who write, direct, and perform poetry and dramas centered on sexual and reproductive health issues which they feel are most pressing on their college campuses. Through participatory learning, the college students visit secondary schools in the surrounding areas to coach youth on how to create their own artistic performances to spread awareness and advocate for safer environments for everyone. Following performances, stakeholders are invited to establish community public health action plans to address the issues brought to light by the students.
