Italy – The Sustainable Development Festival, an initiative of the Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development (ASviS – Alleanza Italiana per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile), is a unique experience that mobilizes millions of people in Italy across all sectors of society raising awareness on the SDGs since 2017. The Festival gives voice to citizens, businesses, public administrations, universities and civil society in order to foster dialogue on the 2030 Agenda.
ASviS, which brings together more than 320 organizations from the economic and social world, organizes the Festival together with its Members and with the support of Partners and Tutors, over a span of 17 days, as many as the SDGs. Since the first edition of the Festival in 2017, more than 5,000 events have been organized including conferences, workshops, shows, cultural events, exhibits, documentaries and much more.
The Sustainable Development Festival promoted by ASviS has been recognized as a Finalist of the UN SDG Action Awards in both 2019 and 2020. In 2020, the Festival became global with the collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the network of Italian embassies, together with international organizations and foreign embassies based in Italy. The 2020 hybrid festival, with the call to action which was #oradiagire (“It’s time to act”), included over 800 initiatives and over 75 events in Italian embassies in over 30 countries and five continents.
In 2023, there were almost 1,000 events in Italy and abroad, reaching over 48.4 million contacts with broadcasted spots by Rai networks, TV and radio. Since participating in the UN SDG Action Awards, the Festival also achieved 121 million impressions with #festivalsvilupposustainable and #accendiamoilfuturo. In 2024, the Festival will take place from 7-23 May.
The awareness raised by the Festival has contributed to bring sustainability at the forefront of the national dialogue: the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, the Governor of Bankitalia and many others attended the various editions and took into consideration the proposals that emerged from the Festival to shape national policies – showing that the Festival is mobilizing civil society. On 22 February 2022, a historical reform long advocated by the ASviS since its foundation was accomplished, the Italian Constitution was reformed with the inclusion of environmental protection principles, partly in the interest of future generations.
