Imagine a world where no one is invisible—where every person has a nationality, an identity, and the chance to belong.
UN SDG Action Awards Honourable Mention #IBelong Campaign, launched by UNHCR in 2014, set out to make that world a reality—mobilizing governments, civil society, and communities to end statelessness within a decade.
At a time when millions of people remain denied nationality—barred from school, health care, work, and even marriage—the campaign flipped the script: turning statelessness from an invisible injustice into a global human rights priority.
The impact is historic. More than 565,000 people have gained nationality. 77 states acceded to UN Statelessness Conventions. 22 countries pledged to take action. 13 states reformed laws to ensure no child is born stateless. From Kyrgyzstan resolving all known cases to Kenya, Brazil, Thailand, and Sierra Leone granting long-denied citizenship, many lives have been transformed.
Now, as the campaign concludes, its momentum carries forward through the Global Alliance to End Statelessness—a new coalition uniting states, UN agencies, civil society, and stateless-led groups to ensure that every person, everywhere, has the right to belong.
