Safecity is a platform that crowdsources personal stories of sexual harassment and abuse in public spaces, while using the collected data to create solutions at local levels. The platform encourages women and girls to share their stories, learn that they are not alone as “victims”, and feel empowered to stand up for themselves. The collected data, which can be submitted anonymously, gets aggregated as hot spots on a map, thereby illustrating patterns and trends. Individuals, communities, and local administrations use this data to identify factors that are associated with gender-based violence, along with establishing solutions that promote safe and equal access to public spaces.
Through the platform, Safecity has collaborated with police to change patrol timings, municipal authorities to improve street lighting and public restroom facilities, and transportation authorities to issue women-only bus licenses in Nepal.
Since their launch in 2012, Safecity has collected over 40,000 stories from India and abroad, while directly reaching over 1 million people.
